Health Visitor (HV)
A health visitor is a registered nurse who is specially trained to assess the health needs of individuals, families and communities and aims to promote mental and physical health in the community by offering practical help and advice. They provide support and information to families from the birth of a child until they start school. Their activities may include visiting a newborn baby at home, assessing a child's development, and involvement in parenting. Concerns about development may be raised first with, or by, a health visitor during a routine assessment in the home or clinic. This may lead to a referral to other professionals who have expertise in children's development disorders.
