Scottish Autism Network
2nd Conference
'Promoting Good Practice in Autism Spectrum Disorders in Scotland'
The Scottish Autism Network held its 2nd Conference on the 30th November 2006 at Strathclyde University. The main emphasis of the day was for practitioners in the field of ASD to network, share information and good practice. Over 30 projects and organisations displayed examples of their work and delegates had the opportunity to talk to other professionals and view the resources. For a list of display stands click

Professor Aline-Wendy Dunlop welcomed all the delegates to the Conference and Dawn Larman and Gill West, the Manager and Development Officer from The Autism Network gave an overview of the day. Click

The first keynote speaker was Dame Stephanie Shirley, UK Chair of Autism Speaks and an IT entrepreneur turned philanthropist who gave a very personal and inspiring talk about her life with her son with autism and her aim since his death to fund quality research into autism. The morning session concluded with the 280 delegates attending forums associated with either their area of work or a specific topic. For a list of Forums and Feedback click here. At the forums delegates were asked to sign up if they were interested in participating in future working groups and networking forums, the response to this was excellent and will be followed up early next year.
The afternoon keynote speaker was Hugh Morgan, Chief Executive of Autism Cymru who spoke about how developments in working together had improved support services in Wales. Click here for Hugh Morgan's presentation
The remaining part of the programme saw delegates attending a choice of interesting workshops covering a range of topics from bullying to access to managing anxiety. Click here for some of the workshop presentations
Feedback from the day was extremely positive with delegates having established a lot of new contacts and ideas to take back to their own projects.
